We are a local family owned Boston-based company that was founded on the principle of doing what we say and saying what we mean. We invest throughout the Northeast with a particular focus in the Boston metropolitan area. In addition to making direct equity investments for our own account, we also invest in joint ventures with third-party Owners and Operators. Our investments pertain to all major property types, including office, industrial, retail and housing, focused on mixed-used assets with a heavy multifamily focus.
Harbor East was born from the hard-work, self-motivation and dedication to success of its founder, James J. Murphy. Now in the company’s second generation, with over 70-years of combined Real Estate experience, the future of Harbor East holds growth and prosperity. We have a proven history of successfully investing, managing and developing Real Estate for its own account and also for strategic partnerships, bringing out value-add opportunities in very competitive markets. The management team of Harbor East is thorough, experienced, adds value at every opportunity all while being energetic. The team focuses on strategic, out-of-the-box thinking, disciplined analysis, and straightforward negotiation strategy. Our goal is to find and create value that others may not see and to build strong relationships with all parties involved in a transaction from the Seller, 3rd Party Vendors, and Lenders, down to the Tenants. James is the epitome of a hardworking self-starter that “came from nothing and worked for everything.” James started in Real Estate in the late 1970’s and has successfully bought, sold, managed and developed properties and strategically repositioned assets and portfolios. He oversees all investments and dispositions and stays active in the future growth of the company. James has never been above any job and still gets his hands dirty.
Sean has been working alongside his Father from an early age. He inherited a lot of his strong qualities, which has helped shape what the business is today. To better help position the family business for a successful future, Sean spent 10 years working in the Real Estate debt and equity industry at a global Real Estate institution; while there, he worked on lending and investing more than a billion dollars in Real Estate transactions. Most notably in 2013, Sean worked with a small team that purchased Wellesley Office Park for $237 million, which was the largest suburban office park sale at that time. Sean has brought back this learned institutional knowledge and systems to the family business. Currently, he handles property management, portfolio strategy, and new investments and dispositions for Harbor East. Similar to his Father, Sean has a “do what it takes” mentality, whether that means fixing a toilet in a pinch or valuing, negotiating, and closing on a new property.
